Safety Glass

At Bebington Glazing, we can provide safety glass in Wirral and across the North West and North Wales for when standard double glazing is not enough. There are many areas where safety glass is necessary to protect yourself or others.

Our toughened or laminated glass meet national standards or Codes of Practice specifically regarding the use of safety glazing materials, such as low level areas where a child could accidentally fall.

Safety glass is designed to resist breaking and if broken it is intended to minimize injuries by shattering. Safety glass is predominantly used in public areas, car windows; to promote safety in the event of a collision and critical areas where it is mandatory.

There are two types of safety glass commonly used; toughened and laminated glass. Neither are unbreakable, they are designed to minimise the risk of injury.

Toughened Glass
This breaks into small pieces that have blunt edges which are unlikely to cause serious injury, rather than breaking into jagged pieces like regular glass. Toughened or tempered glass is manufactured through an extreme heating and cooling process, this strengthens the glass making it four to five times stronger than standard glass.

Laminated Glass
Laminated safety glass is made in the same way as toughened glass but is sandwiched together by a sheet of polyvinyl butyral (adhesive film which can be transparent or coloured). This is also required to make tinted glass. If laminated glass is broken, the adhesive film acts like tape holding the shards of glass together without allowing it to fall.

Our toughened or laminated glass can be used where national standards or Codes of Practice specifically require the use of safety glazing materials, such as low level areas where a child could accidentally fall.
